H1N1 influenza, financial crisis, unemployment, stimulus plan, war, terrorists, green houses gases, climate shift and the rapid evolution of new technology.
Social Media and you!
The above is a list that can scare the most hard minded individual. We have come of age into a world of fatal distractions that easily overwhelm the masses. With everything happening, we as individuals are beginning to focus on multiple digital platforms in order to push our careers/businesses forward. We choose to connect with as many people as possible through social networks and new technology causing a deep lapse in focus and judgement as the phrase "all eyes on me" make it extremely hard to find time we desperately need to stay rejuvenated (not a total bad thing). News portals have really taken control of these platforms in order to bombard us with overwhelming content and 'Breaking News'. What is reality? Where does it end? Who to follow? who to meet?
It's my opinion that we have given birth to a young generation of nano-taskers without ability to execute due to overwhelming distraction. A nano-tasker is someone who tries to multitask a TON of things at once, but has NO idea how to finalize/execute ONE task. How many applications are open on your computer right now? MSN, Email, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, news portals, Blackberry Messenger? who to listen to? How to prioritize? We have so much information at our fingertips more then ever before and it is apparent that some (Not all) are not using it properly. In order to really strive and succeed, you have to decipher the code and realize that you are not dying of influenza, the world is not collapsing and that there are ways to use these portals and outlets to the best of their ability in order to help you achieve desired goals.
We are at a crossroads!
Being a part of an event design firm forces our staff to dive into the land of 1's and 0's for hours of research daily to stay on top of trends, resources and of course - events. It's important to Tweet and Facebook in order to build a network of awareness and also read mounds of online portals that have very different opinions. We have developed a strong system of directories and portal lists that we constantly stay on top of to gain our business perspective - and very rarely do we detour from that path. Through consistency, our team has been able to dig deep into the virtual world and maintain a large 'form' of data without falling ill to the jargon of insanity that takes individuals away from the end result. It takes one 'tiny url' or breaking news story to divert attention away from our goals, but we take pride in staying on task and use the large amount of information properly and in return, release that information to our network that actually can make a difference. Twitter has become a focus for our firm and through it, we have met a large sum of individuals who have great validity in what we do. We keep connected, we take responsible steps to be an insider and responsible Tweeter!
It is naive to 'ask' for responsible reporting from major networks, blogger and individuals. I'm sitting here with the ability to say what I want via the Internet with some capability to provide a large amount of information through my network. I would say It's important that we as individuals learn how fear blocks judgement. Read, learn and comprise conclusions, but make sure the information you are consuming makes sense and does not add to the heap of fear we already feel. By this, you can see how to protect yourself and focus on what truly matters. There has been a rise in the number of corporations that are going green. That is incredible and also creates a community that is working towards a common goal! Now, what's the next step of corporate and individual responsibility that can help progress the next generation towards greatness?
In conclusion, individuals have an opportunity to really take hold of new social media and run a path that can open doors, start relationships and even help sales. It's just a matter of staying away from the clutter and by CHOOSING to create and deliver a responsible/professional outlet for all to take part in!
